Theater … for a change (under the name of “Compensating for our Shortcomings”) produced a short film for the 2007 Des Moines 48 Hour Film Project. Our film, BACKROAD, stars David Oddy, John Butz, Jami Bassman, Andrew Adams, Morgan Beary, Kevin Spire, and Tipper the dog. Written by John Cisar, Jeff Phillips, Shawn Wilson and Thatcher Williams, BACKROAD follows the final trek of John Shold as he comes to terms with the ones he loves as he moves on in life.

The 48 Hour Film Project gives each production team a randomly chosen genre (we drew “Road Movie”) and required elements (this year: Prop was a business card, line of dialogue was “If at first you don’t succeed … you know the rest.” and character was John Shold - a tourist). Then each team has 48 hours to write, cast, shoot, edit, produce a short film.

This is our second year of entering in the 48 Hour Film Project and our first year to be in the running for “Best of City”, as well as other awards. Join us for the Best of City Screening and Awards to see all 12 of the judge’s top choices on Thursday, August 16, 7pm at the Fleur Cinema & Cafe, 4545 Fleur Drive, Des Moines. Tickets are only $12 and are able to be bought in advance at IowaTIX.com or at the door the night of the Awards. Your ticket includes refreshments as well as the screening and awards ceremony!

And … for those of you who read this far … here’s our film:
