Theater … for a change (under the name of “Compensating for our Shortcomings”) produced a short film for the 2007 National Film Challenge (similar to the 48 Hour Film Project).

Our film, DECAFFEINATED, stars Jami Bassman, Suzie Oddy, Mary Bricker, Amanda Banks, David Oddy, John Robinson, Larry Mahlstedt, Travis Cherniss, Michael DeNato, and voiceover by Amy Williams. Written by Thatcher Williams, Larry Mahlstedt and Jami Bassman - DECAFFEINATED is a campy short film that pays homages to various super hero tv shows, comics and movies.

We started with a randomly chosen genre (we had a choice between Action/Adventure and Super Hero) and required elements (this year: Prop was a toilet plunger, line of dialogue was “Those are ginormous.” and character was Kathy Klonsky - folksinger). We had from Friday at 7 pm until the last FedEx pick up on Monday to write, cast, shoot, edit, produce a short film.

This is the 3rd short film contest we’ve entered … including 2 previous 48 Hour Film Projects. 185 teams from across the United States competed in this year’s National Film Challenge, we know of 4 from the Des Moines area. We will be working with the other Des Moines teams to put together a showing of all of our films we entered. Until then … here’s our film:
