Sicilian King Leontes believes that his wife Hermione is about to give birth to the child of his boyhood friend, King Polixenes of Bohemia. While Polixenes flees for his life, Leontes denies that the newborn Princess Perdita is his, demands the baby be abandoned out of the kingdom, and imprisons Hermione.
While imprisoned, Hermione loses consciousness and passes away. Perdita is found by a Bohemian shepherd who decides to raise her as his own. Shortly thereafter, Leontes discovers that Hermione was an ever loving and loyal wife and Perdita truly was his daughter. Leontes falls into mourning, guilt and despair as his life seems to fall apart around him.
Sixteen years pass and Polixenes son, Prince Florizel, finds himself in love with a young shepherd girl. Polixenes demands that Florizel never see the girl again, as he must marry a women who befits his princely status. Florizel and Perdita flee Bohemia toward Sicilia so that they may live and love freely and happily.
Once in Sicilia, the truth of Perdita’s identity is discovered and King Leontes begins to recover from his anguish. As friendships and families are being restored something wondrous occurs at the new statue honoring Queen Hermione to bring about a happy ending to this tale.
